Directed by Michael Powell & Emerich Pressburger Starring Deborah Kerr, David Farrar, Flora Robson. 1 hour 41 minutes, cert U.
A group of Anglican nuns, led by Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), are sent to a mountain in the Himalayas. Housed in an opulent abandoned old palace they struggle to establish a convent and a hospital, but isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries to a spiritual crisis and to question themselves to the edge of madness. This brilliantly dark brooding film winner of two Oscars – Cinematography and Art Direction – is considered one of Pressburger and Powell’s finest films.
