One Life

Directed by James Hawes, starring Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonathan Pryce. 1 hour 50 minutes, 12A.

The true story of Nicholas Winton, a young London stockbroker who with others was able to rescue over 600 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia before the Nazi troops arrived. Horrified by the plight of the refugee children in 1938–39, the 29-year-old Winton decided to take matters into his own hands and the Kindertransport was born. The film alternates between this time period and 50 years later, when Winton still troubled by the thoughts of all the children he was unable to rescue, was featured in an incredibly moving episode of “That’s Life”. The Guardian commented “you’d need a heart of stone not to be touched by this extraordinary true story.”
