The NettleDress

Documentary. Directed by Dylan Howitt. 68 minutes, cert 12A. Introduced by Yuli Somme.

This beautiful documentary follows textile artist Allan Brown on his seven-year labour of love, to make a dress entirely from woven stinging nettles. We see not only a remarkable and challenging experiment in sustainable fashion, but also how his art becomes a way to cope with the shocking death of his wife – as he forages, spins, weaves, cuts and finally sews the cloth, we share the healing process of working through his grief. Anyone who has suffered personal loss, or cares about sustainable fashion and slow craft will enjoy this uniquely creative film. Chagford’s own textile artist, Yuli Somme, will lead a discussion after the film.
